Satisfy your sweet tooth and those chocolate cravings with this easy Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse recipe! Made with just 3 simple ingredients, it's a high protein dessert you will reach for over and over again. Top it with your favorite whipped topping and fresh berries for a truly delicious sweet treat.

When I think of healthy dessert, I think of recipes that use real, whole food ingredients like this high-protein chocolate mousse. I'm less concerned with calories and I'm more concerned with eating something that is not only delicious but also nourishing. When it comes to high protein desserts, I like to use protein powders that are clean and use only a handful of ingredients.
These days, there are so many protein dessert recipes out there but I find many of them use ultra processed ingredients like jello or protein shakes in order to keep calories low. Personally, I'd much rather enjoy a higher calorie protein dessert that's made with real, wholesome ingredients any day!

3 Ingredient Cottage Cheese Chocolate Mousse Ingredients & Tested Substitutions
Plain Cottage Cheese. The main ingredient in this recipe is indeed plain cottage cheese! You can use full-fat cottage cheese, which is my preference, or low-fat cottage cheese if you prefer. My preferred brands are Good Culture Cottage Cheese or Daisy Cottage Cheese as they tend to have less liquid allowing for the mousse to have a smooth texture.
Chocolate Protein Powder. I recommend using this protein powder as it blends best with the cottage cheese. You can use your favorite protein powder, but note that you should choose one you know you like the taste of. The kind I love from Equip Foods tastes like a chocolate milkshake so it's always my first recommendation! Whey protein or pea protein can be used, but note the texture may be thicker. I'd recommend starting with half a scoop of protein powder, blending and then adjusting based on your desired texture.
You can also omit protein powder entirely and opt for 2 tablespoons cocoa powder or cacao powder to give it the chocolate flavor if you don't like protein powder.
Maple Syrup. I prefer to use maple syrup to add sweetness, but you may use honey, date syrup or coconut sugar if you prefer. Liquid monk fruit sweetener will also work as well, just note that it is very sweet so a little goes a long way.
Expert Tips & Add Ins
- To enhance the chocolate flavor, add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract to the cottage cheese mixture.
- Top with fresh fruit, fresh berries or homemade whipped cream and a sprig of mint.
- Add a few chocolate chips for a truly decadent high-protein dessert.
- Use peanut butter powder in place of the chocolate protein powder to make cottage cheese peanut butter mousse.
- Be sure to choose a protein powder you actually enjoy the taste of or you will not like the taste of this cottage cheese mousse. I recommend this kind from Equip Foods.

How to Store Cottage Cheese Mousse
If you want to meal prep the chocolate cottage cheese mousse by doubling or tripling the recipe, you may store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one week. You can do the same if you do not finish your single serving of mousse by adding any leftovers to an airtight container and storing in the fridge. I do not recommend freezing the cottage cheese mousse.
