Chocolate Protein Mousse Ingredients & Tested Substitutions

  • Plain Greek Yogurt or Skyr. My personal preference is to use Skyr as it gives the mousse a thick, creamy texture, and also generally contains a higher protein content, but you may use your favorite plain greek yogurt instead. I recommend using a non-fat greek yogurt or Skyr if you're looking to keep your fat intake lower but keep protein intake high.
  • Chocolate Protein Powder. There is not a specific type of protein powder needed for this recipe to work. You can use your favorite whey protein powder, pea protein, or whatever type of protein powder you like best. If you don't have a favorite and aren't sure where to start you can check out this helpful guide to easy to digest protein powders to find one that's right for you. I personally like this easy-to-digest vegan protein powder from TumLove. You can use the code KIMBERLY15 to save 15% off of your first order.
  • Maple Syrup or Honey. Either real maple syrup or honey will work if you're looking to add a touch of sweetness to the chocolate protein pudding. If your protein powder already contains a sweetener, you may omit this if desired.

Protein Mousse Toppings & Add-Ins

  • If you are a huge chocolate dessert fan, add a tablespoon or two of cocoa powder to really boost the chocolate flavor.
  • Add ⅛ cup (2 Tbsp.) of peanut butter or almond butter to make a creamy chocolate peanut butter protein mousse loaded with healthy fats and a little more protein.
  • If you are looking to switch things up, use vanilla greek yogurt or Skyr and vanilla protein powder to make a creamy vanilla protein mousse.
  • Top with your favorite fresh fruit (I love fresh berries personally), dark chocolate chunks, cocoa nibs, or refined sugar free chocolate chips.
  • No chocolate mousse recipe is complete without a dollop of homemade whipped cream! Try this easy recipe for refined sugar free Crema Mascarpone, made with heavy cream and mascarpone cheese, if you want to make your protein pudding perfect for special occasions.

Protein Mousse Step-By-Step Instructions

  1. Mix the mousse base. Add the greek yogurt or Skyr, chocolate protein powder (and if you choose to, honey or maple syrup) to a large mixing bowl. Using a hand mixer, mix on medium speed until the ingredients are fully mixed and incorporated. The mousse should have a light, fluffy texture.

Chocolate Protein Mousse FAQs

How many grams of protein does this chocolate mousse have?

It depends on the type of yogurt you're using as well as the protein powder you've selected. It will be around 35-45 grams of protein on average. I use Siggi's non-fat Skyr and this easy to digest chocolate protein powder from TumLove which equates to around 43 grams of protein per serving of this protein mousse. If you'd like to try TumLove you can use code KIMBERLY15 to save 15% off of your first order.

What should the texture be like?

This protein mousse should have a fluffy texture and be on the thicker side. If you use plain yogurt instead of greek yogurt or skyr, your mousse may come out too thin, basically like a chocolate yogurt, so be sure to use greek yogurt or skyr to achieve the best texture.

What can I serve with chocolate protein mousse?

I love to garnish this chocolate dessert with fresh fruit like raspberries or strawberries, but it is also delicious with a drizzle of nut butter, chocolate chips, crunchy nuts or even a dollop of whipped cream.

How to store protein mousse

This recipe makes one serving of protein mousse, however if you are going to double or triple the recipe to serve to friends or meal prep for the week, you may store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up 4 days.
