When it comes to protein ice cream recipes, nothing makes them quite as well as the ninja creami machine! Ever since I bought one I have been making tons of delicious ice cream recipes like this ninja creami chocolate protein ice cream, vanilla protein ice cream, strawberry protein ice cream and mint chocolate chip protein ice cream. I love playing around with fun flavors like this Cereal Milk protein ice cream or this Buncha Crunch protein ice cream.
In fact, you can find all of my dairy free protein ice cream recipes to make in the ninja creami ice cream maker in this post. I promise once you try them you'll never go back to regular ice cream again!
While each of my ninja creami ice cream recipes are protein ice cream recipes, I wanted to make a recipe that was really macro friendly for the people who can't resist eating the entire pint in one sitting (hi, it's me!). Chocolate Peanut Butter is my all time favorite flavor, so I figured there was no better place to start!
Why You'll Love This Recipe
- It is super macro friendly. The entire pint of ice cream has 56 grams of protein with just 330 calories, 8.5 grams of fat and only 2 grams of carbs so it is the perfect macro friendly protein dessert!
- It is dairy free. Made with a dairy free protein shake and chocolate protein powder, it has a perfectly creamy texture despite being dairy free.
- It is healthy. Healthier than most homemade ice cream, you can feel good about eating the whole pint!

Ninja Creami Protein Ice Cream Ingredients & Tested Substitutions
OWYN Pro Elite Chocolate Protein Shake. I find OWYN to be one of the healthier alternatives to something like a Premier Protein shake. Plus it is dairy free and vegan as well and has a very high protein content of 32 g protein. I recommend using this brand but you may choose another brand of pre made protein shake if you prefer. Note that it will change the macros so you'll need to recalculate them.
Chocolate Protein Powder. My personal preference is always going to be Equip Foods Prime Protein in the chocolate flavor. It tastes like an actual milkshake and it blends really well! Feel free to use your favorite protein powder, but note that you should choose a protein powder that suits your taste preferences or you won't enjoy the taste of this ice cream.
Peanut Butter Powder. This is optional but I added peanut butter powder to add a little extra protein to the ice cream base as well as a touch of peanut butter flavor.
Peanut Butter Cups. Optional for topping. I like Skinny Dipped peanut butter cups. Note that I have not included these in the macro breakdown since the toppings are optional.
Ninja Creami Protein Ice Cream Step by Step Instructions
1. Mix the ice cream base. Pour the protein shake, protein powder and peanut butter powder into a ninja creami pint container. Using a handheld milk frother, mix the ice cream base until combined. No clumps of powder should remain. Alternatively, you could mix in a blender and pour into the pint container to the max fill line.
2. Freeze. Place storage lid on the container and place in the freezer on a level surface for a minimum of 8 hours. Ninja recommends at least 24 hours but I don't have that kind of patience and find that 8 hours is plenty.
3. Mix the ice cream. Once the base is frozen, place the ninja pint container in the outer bowl of the ninja creami and secure the outer bowl lid on top. Lock the outerbowl in place in the ninja creami motor base. For the initial spin you will choose the "Lite Ice Cream" function.
4. Respin. Once the first spin is complete, you will need to use the respin function in order for the ice cream to become super creamy. My best creami prep tip is to add a splash of milk of choice, just enough to barely cover the top of the pint, before you respin.
5. Add mix ins or toppings. You can feel free to customize this recipe further by adding peanut butter cups or chocolate chips as mix ins or simply add your favorite toppings & enjoy!
Expert Tips, Tricks & Favorite Add Ins
- Make this edible cookie dough and scoop out small cookie dough balls to top this high protein chocolate ice cream in a super delicious way!
- Or keep it simple by adding chocolate chips, a peanut butter cup or a drizzle of peanut butter.
- Before respinning, I recommend always adding a little bit more almond milk, or dairy free milk of choice. Just enough to almost cover the top of the pint container is perfect, about 2-3 tsp. This will help ensure the final result is super creamy ice cream.
How to Store Leftover Ninja Creami Protein Ice Cream
Since this recipe is intended to be a single serve recipe, you shouldn't need to store it, but if you simply cannot finish the entire pint in one sitting you can follow these simple steps for storage. Smooth over the ice cream that is left in the container with the back of a spoon. Place the lid back on & freeze. You will need to run the leftovers back through the same steps in the Ninja Creami when you are going to enjoy it again. Note that if you added mix ins, the machine will end up pulverizing them!
