Homemade Sugar Free Fudgesicles Ingredients & Tested Substitutions
Full Fat Coconut Milk. I like to use Thai Kitchen organic coconut milk because it is super creamy thanks to the full fat coconut cream & is what makes these fudge pops have such a perfect texture.
Canned Sweet Potato. Sweet potato might sound strange, but it is flavorless in this recipe. It also contributes to creaminess of these dairy free popsicles. You can also use canned pumpkin if you prefer.
Dark Cocoa Powder. Opt for a high quality unsweetened cocoa powder.
Chocolate Protein Powder. Opt for a high quality chocolate protein powder, especially if you're looking to get the hormone health benefits which you can read more about below. If you don't already have a protein powder you like, check out this guide I created to gut friendly protein powders.
Collagen Peptides. Collagen is another way to boost the protein in this recipe. It's optional but highly recommended.
Vanilla Extract. Opt for high quality vanila. I love adding vanilla extract to chocolate desserts because it helps bring out the richness of the chocolate flavor.
Sea Salt. Using celtic sea salt helps to add additional minerals that you might not be getting in the rest of your diet, however traditional sea salt is also great.
Dark Chocolate Chips. This is optional, but I like to melt sugar free chocolate chips & drizzle them over the fudge pops. It's a great way to kick this recipe up a notch!
Sugar Free Fudge Pop Recipe Step By Step Instructions
1. Make the Fudge Pop Mixture. Add all ingredients except for the dark chocolate chips to a blender & blend until smooth.
2. Pour into Popsicle Molds. Pour the chocolate mixture evenly into popsicle molds. Be careful to leave just a little bit of room & not overflow the mold. Insert wooden popsicle sticks into the molds. Be careful not to press too hard when inserting the wooden sticks as the popsicle mixture can easily spill.
3. Freeze. Freeze the fudge pops for at least 8 hours up to overnight.
4. Drizzle with Chocolate. If you're using the chocolate chips, melt them in the microwave in 10 second increments, being careful not to burn or seize the chocolate. Carefully drizzle over the popsicles & enjoy!
Expert Tips & Tricks
- If you're using metal popsicle molds, the fudge pops may stick a bit after freezing. If this is the case, simply run the mold under warm water for a few seconds being careful to make sure you do not get any water into the mold, and the popsicle should come right out.
- Low carb dieter? You can omit the sweet potato & cocoa powder to make keto fudgesicles if you prefer.
- Instead of drizzling the popsicles with melted chocolate, try a little drizzle of tahini or nut butter.
- If you'd like to add a touch of sweetness, use raw local honey or sugar alternatives like monk fruit or coconut sugar.
Hormone Healthy Ingredient Benefits
This high protein dessert uses basic ingredients that are functional foods. They give you a boost in nutrients that most women who are stressed out or watching their calories desperately need more of, according to Marisa Faye, the nutritionist I not only personally work with for my own health needs, but who also helped develop this recipe! So, let’s meet the nutritional superstars in this recipe:
- Magnesium is needed for bone health, blood sugar control, muscle health and metabolic function. Find this mineral in the cocoa powder in our recipe!
- Potassium is needed for muscle health, fluid balance, thyroid function, and cellular function. Find this mineral in the coconut milk and sweet potato.
- Protein is needed to make hormones (yes, MAKE hormones), build muscle, and to keep you full and satisfied so you don’t go having a snack attack late at night. Find this nutrient in the high quality protein powder in our recipe! And, btw we are protein powder snobs, because not all protein powders contain bioavailable nutrients like the one we recommend here.
Not only will you get all these nutrients, but every single ingredient was chosen with a purpose!
How to Store Sugar Free Fudgesicles
