You might not realize it, but not all chocolate covered strawberries are actually vegan chocolate covered strawberries. Even if you are an avid dark chocolate eater, some dark chocolate brands still contain milk solids and even flavorings that aren't always vegan friendly. Not to worry, in addition to this easy vegan chocolate covered strawberries recipe, I'm also listing + linking my favorite vegan chocolate options in this post for you along with three other vegan chocolate dessert recipes so you have all the resources you need and four vegan chocolate dessert recipes to get a head start on your vegan friendly Valentine's desserts!
This recipe uses three types of chocolate; dark chocolate, white chocolate and chocolate hazelnut spread. Here are my favorite vegan friendly chocolate options that you will need to make these vegan friendly chocolate covered strawberries.
What are the best vegan chocolate options?
Dark Chocolate: I have a few favorites when it comes to vegan dark chocolate that would be perfect to use when making these easy vegan chocolate covered strawberries.
- Enjoy Life Foods: Enjoy Life Foods actually has both dark chocolate and semi-sweet chocolate chips that melt beautifully. I used the semi-sweet chocolate chips when I made these vegan chocolate covered strawberries you see in the photos, but I have also used dark chocolate as well. The choice is really up to your personal preference.
- Hu Kitchen Dark Chocolate Gems: Hu Kitchen makes delicious vegan dark chocolate gems that melt easily and also make for those delicious little chocolate pools you often see in vegan chocolate chip cookies these days!
White Chocolate: If you decide to make the white chocolate drizzle for these vegan chocolate covered strawberries, I recommend using Pascha Vegan White Chocolate Chips. It melts and sets just like dairy-laiden chocolate!
Chocolate Hazelnut Spread: You may not realize this, but Nutella is not vegan as it contains milk powder. Don't fret, there are vegan friendly chocolate hazelnut spreads out there you can use that are just as delicious!
- Lakanto Suntella: Made with monkfruit sweetener, Lakanto's Suntella it the closest thing flavor-wise to Nutella that is also vegan friendly. It is made using sunflower seeds but has that nutty chocolatey flavoring you'd expect from a chocolate hazelnut spread. This is a great refined sugar free, keto friendly option.
- Pyure Hazelnut Spread: The texture of Pyure chocolate hazelnut spread is most like Nutella to me but it is more chocolatey and has only a hint of hazelnut and is also a great keto friendly refined sugar free option.
I love the idea of using these vegan chocolate covered strawberries to top off a delicious vegan chocolate cake with vegan buttercream frosting making this a festive vegan Valentine's treat!

It's so simple! You can check this video to get an idea of the simple steps you need to take in order to make this vegan chocolate covered strawberries recipe before you gather your ingredients and get to work!
Ingredients
16 oz fresh strawberries
1 cup chocolate chips
2 tablespoon chocolate hazelnut spread
optional: ¼ cup white chocolate chips for drizzling
- Add 2 cups of water to a small pot and bring to a boil on the stovetop.
- Once water is at a rolling boil, reduce heat to medium and place a small metal or heatproof bowl on top of the pot. Ensure the bowl is large enough where it does not fall into the pot. This is called a double boiler.
- Add 1 cup of chocolate chips to the heat proof bowl + 2 tablespoon of chocolate hazelnut spread.
- Using a silicone spatula, gently fold chocolate chips and chocolate hazelnut spread together. Continue folding in the chocolate until it is fully melted, around 2-3 minutes, being mindful not to allow the chocolate to burn or seize.
- As soon as the chocolate chips are melted and fully combined with the chocolate hazelnut spread, remove from the heat immediately.
- Dip strawberries in chocolate and place on a silicone or parchment lined baking sheet. Repeat process until all strawberries are covered.
- Refrigerate for 30 minutes to set before drizzling with white chocolate, if using.
- To prepare white chocolate for drizzling, repeat the process of creating a double boiler and add ¼ cup white chocolate to a clean heat proof bowl + melt. Using a spoon, drizzle melted white chocolate over chocolate covered strawberries and place back in the fridge to set for another 30 minutes.
