Vanilla Protein Latte Ingredients & Tested Substitutions
Coffee. You can use fresh brewed hot coffee or a double shot of espresso. If you'd prefer to make it iced I recommend using cold brew coffee.
Vanilla Protein Shake. To make this a two ingredient drink, I recommend using OWYN Pro Elite Vanilla protein shake. Not only does it have 32 g protein in a full 12oz bottle, but it is made with better ingredients than the leading pre-made protein shake. It is also dairy free, gluten free and vegan.
Almond Milk. If you're not using the pre-made protein shake, you will need almond milk or your favorite non-dairy milk. If you'll be making a hot latte and would like steamed milk, oat milk is my personal favorite because it is nice and creamy.
Vanilla Protein Powder. You'll need ½ scoop of vanilla protein powder. I recommend using Equip Foods Prime protein powder as it dissolves much nicer than a whey protein or pea protein, but you may use your favorite protein powder instead if you like. Note that if you don't like the flavor of your protein powder, you won't like the flavor of your latte!
Expert Tips & Tricks
- For the perfect hot latte, if you're using the milk and protein powder method, I recommend using a handheld frother to mix the protein powder into the hot coffee and steaming the milk separately. If you're making an iced latte, you can feel free to use a handheld milk frother to mix the milk and protein powder before pouring into the cold brew.
- Use chocolate protein powder or a chocolate protein shake instead of vanilla if you're a chocolate lover.
- For an easy, super high protein breakfast pair this latte with these kale & mushroom egg bites and air fryer breakfast sausage.
- If you aren't dairy free, feel free to swap out the almond milk for dairy milk or any milk of your choice. Fairlife is a great option for a higher protein dairy milk and Ripple is a great higher protein dairy alternative.
- For best results, I highly recommend using an easy to dissolve protein powder like Equip Foods Prime Protein otherwise you run the risk of your protein powder clumping. If you'd prefer to use your favorite protein powder, sprinkle it in a little at a time and froth in between to help it fully dissolve.
Protein Latte Step by Step Instructions
1. If you're using the pre-made protein shake follow these steps. For a hot latte, brew your coffee and pour into a 12 oz mug. For iced, pour cold brew into a large glass over ice.
2. Pour ½ the bottle of protein shake into the mug or glass and stir to combine. Alternatively, you can add the coffee and full bottle of protein shake to a shaker bottle for a larger option.
1. If you're using the milk & protein powder option follow these steps. For iced, pour the cold brew into a large glass with ice. In a separate tall glass, pour about ¼ to ½ cup of milk of choice & add a half scoop of protein powder to the milk.
2. Using a handheld milk frother, mix the protein powder & milk until frothy and no clumps of protein powder remain. This method works best with a collagen or beef isolate based protein powder.
3. If you're making hot coffee, I recommend mixing the protein powder directly into the coffee using a handheld frother. You can then steam your milk as normal and pour it into the mug of hot coffee.
