Lucky Charms Krispie Treats Ingredients & Tested Substitutions
- Butter. I like to use grass-fed butter, but you can use whatever butter you like or vegan butter if needed
- Mini marshmallows. Mini marshmallows melt smoothly and create that gooey base. Look for gluten free marshmallows or vegan marshmallows will work, too.
- Vanilla extract. Just a little vanilla extract adds warmth and depth of flavor to this easy dessert.
- Lucky Charms cereal. Lucky Charms & its colorful marshmallows are the star of the show! I recently learned that they're gluten free (who knew?!)
Lucky Charms Krispie Treats Step By Step Instructions
1. Melt the butter and marshmallows. Add the butter to a large pot or large saucepan over low heat to medium-low heat, stirring gently until melted, then add the mini marshmallows and stir often until fully melted and smooth; the mixture should look like a thick marshmallow fluff or paste.

2. Add the remaining ingredients. As soon as the marshmallows are melted, remove the pot from the heat and immediately stir in the vanilla extract and Lucky Charms cereal, folding quickly with a rubber spatula until the cereal is evenly coated in gooey marshmallows.

3. Press into the baking dish. Transfer the mixture into a prepared pan (an 8×8 square pan or baking dish) lined with a piece of parchment paper or sprayed with nonstick cooking spray, then gently press into an even layer.

4. Cool and slice. Let the treats cool at room temperature for about 10 minutes, then transfer to a cutting board and slice into 9 bars; for best results, use a serrated knife.

Tips for Perfect Gooey Lucky Charms Rice Krispie Treats
- Keep the heat low when melting marshmallows to avoid stiff, dry treats
- Do not over-press the cereal mixture into the pan or the bars will be dense
- For thicker, extra gooey bars, use a smaller pan like a loaf pan
- For a fun variation, stir in extra Lucky Charms marshmallows right before pressing into the pan or sprinkle St. Patrick's Day themed sprinkles on top!
- If your spatula sticks, lightly grease it with butter or cooking spray so it doesn't stick to the already gooey melted marshmallows
Storage Tips
- Store Lucky Charms bars in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days
- Place plastic wrap or parchment between layers to prevent sticking
- For longer storage, freeze individual bars in a freezer bag and thaw at room temperature
