Eggnog Protein Shake Ingredients & Tested Substitutions
- Vanilla Protein Powder. If you need help finding an easy to digest protein powder with minimal ingredients, check out this helpful protein powder guide I created. My favorite brand to use is TumLove which has 20 grams of protein per serving. You can shop through this link and use the code KIMBERLY15 to save 15% off of your order. Eggnog protein powder does exist, however I have not yet found a brand that has a good list of ingredients.
- Almond Milk "Eggnog". My favorite way to add the eggnog taste to this shake is by using almond milk egg nog as opposed to traditional eggnog or even light eggnog to cut down on calories & fat since this is a protein shake not an eggnog milkshake. Califia Farms "Holiday Nog" special edition will be perfect.
- Frozen Cauliflower or Banana. I like to use frozen cauliflower instead of ice. It's a great way to sneak in an extra serving of veggies and it's flavorless but you can use banana if you prefer. Alternatively, you can use ice cubes to thicken the shake a little bit.
- Eggnog Spices. Cinnamon & nutmeg is all you'll need.
Eggnog Protein Shake Step by Step Instructions

2. Pour & enjoy. Pour the shake into your favorite glass, garnish with cinnamon sticks if desired & enjoy!
Expert Tips & Tricks
- It is preferable to use a high-powered blender for this recipe but if you have a stainless steel strada blender bottle or something similar you prefer to make your protein shakes in, you should omit the frozen veggies since you will not be able to properly blend them up.
- I like to use almond milk eggnog with vanilla protein powder because there are several vanilla flavor protein powder options that are easy to digest. If that's not a concern of yours, feel free to use eggnog flavored protein powder & unsweetened vanilla almond milk or unsweetened almond milk with 1 teaspoon vanilla extract as an alternative option.
- Instead of using frozen cauliflower or banana you can use frozen spinach! It will turn the drink green, however it will not alter the eggnog flavors and is a delicious way to sneak in another serving of green veggies.
- You can make these smoothies ahead & store in the fridge in individual smoothie bottles up to 4 days.
Eggnog Protein Smoothie FAQs
What kind of milk should I use?
The best option is to opt for an eggnog alternative, like an almond milk eggnog, to keep calories & fat down. You can use other milks like cashew milk, coconut milk, unsweetened almond milk, or whole milk as well. If you choose to do so, you will want to add 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract or 1 teaspoon of rum extract and 1 tablespoon maple syrup to create the traditional eggnog flavors.
What kind of protein powder should I use?
This recipe calls for vanilla protein powder, but you could also use eggnog flavored protein powder or a plain protein powder. If you opt for plain protein powder, you can add 1-2 teaspoon of vanilla extract for extra flavor.
What if my eggnog protein shake is too thick?
If your shake is too thick, simply add a bit more eggnog or filtered water a tablespoon at a time & blend until desired thickness is obtained. Alternatively, if the shake is too thin you can add more frozen veggies or ice cubes & blend until it is thick.
Can I make this smoothie recipe ahead?
You can make this eggnog protein shake ahead! Simply batch make it in a large blender and pour into individual smoothie bottles. It will keep in the fridge up to 4 days.
