cookies and cream protein shake

There was a time when my post-workout routine meant forcing down chalky shakes that barely passed as drinkable (I cringe just thinking about it!) Thankfully, that era is over. Now, I’m all about fun and function, and this shake is both. Inspired by my love for thick & cream milkshakes and the nostalgic flavor of Oreos, I made this recipe with real-life time constraints and flavor cravings in mind.

I like to think of this as the best part of my day, whether I’m blending it up for a post-lift recovery or a 3pm pick-me-up. Bonus? It’s easy to customize based on your favorite type of milk, favorite protein powder, or add-ins like almond butter, chia seeds, or even coconut oil for extra richness. If you loved my Dairy Free Oreo Ice Cream, you’ll be obsessed with this too.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • It is delicious. This creamy shake tastes like dessert but is also part of a healthy diet because it helps you sneak in some extra protein and veggies.
  • It can be made dairy free with ease. Use dairy-free milk and plant protein to keep this vegan and dairy-free. Don't forget, whey protein IS dairy!
  • It is satisfying. With around 25-30 grams of protein depending on the protein powder and milk you use, this shake will keep you satisfied for hours.

Cookies & Cream Protein Shake Ingredients & Tested Substitutions

  • Cookies & Cream Protein Powder.  I look to look for a cookies & cream protein powder blend that includes grass fed beef isolate protein without any natural flavors or artificial flavors. You can use a plant protein powder or a whey protein if you prefer. If you aren't a fan of any of the flavored protein powders on the market, simply use vanilla protein powder (I like this one from Equip best) and toss an extra oreo in for more cookies and cream flavor.
  • Milk of Choice. Almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, or oat milk all work just fine. Use regular milk if you don't need dairy free. I like unsweetened almond milk for the lowest sugar option.
  • Frozen Zucchini or Cauliflower Rice. Totally optional, but adds fiber and helps with the creamy texture without altering taste (I promise!)
  • Dates. Optional for sweetness if your protein powder is lower in sugar. You can skip if your protein is already sweetened.
  • Gluten-Free Oreo Cookies. I prefer to use gluten free oreos but you can use regular oreos if you're not gluten free.
  • Whipped Cream. Optional, but makes it feel like a true dessert! Use coconut whipped cream for dairy-free.

Cookies & Cream Protein Shake Step by Step Instructions

1. Add ingredients to blender. Pour 1 cup of almond milk or milk of choice into a high-speed blender. Add 1 scoop of cookies & cream protein powder, optional frozen veggies, dates (if using), and a handful of ice for thicker texture.

2. Blend until smooth. Blend on high until creamy and smooth.

3. Serve it up. Pour into a glass, top with whipped cream and cookie crumbles or additional chocolate sandwich cookies if desired.

Expert Tips & Tricks

  • Want even more protein and some healthy fats? Add a spoonful of almond butter, peanut butter or some plain Greek yogurt to the cookies and cream shake.
  • Add chia seeds or a scoop of cocoa powder for extra fiber and antioxidants.
  • For a dairy-free version, stick with plant protein and use dairy-free milk like oat or almond.
  • This also freezes beautifully into popsicle molds for a high protein snack later.
  • Want truly indulgent flavors? Add chocolate protein powder for a chocolate cookies n cream recipe or a splash of mint extract for delicious mint chocolate protein smoothies.

How much protein is in this shake?

Depending on the cookies & cream protein powder you use, you can expect around 25–30g of protein per shake, which is a great benchmark for most adults looking to support muscle growth, weight reduction or healthy hormones.

Can I make this without protein powder?

You can try using plain Greek yogurt, chia seeds, and unsweetened cocoa powder as a base, but it won’t have the same grams of protein or shake-like consistency without a protein blend.

Is this good for weight loss?

Yes! This high-protein shake helps with satiety, making it a great option for weight reduction as part of a healthy diet.

How to Store A Cookies & Cream Protein Shake

This is best enjoyed right after blending, but you can store it in an airtight container or glass jar in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Just shake it well before drinking, separation is normal!
