Chocolate Banana Mug Cake Ingredients & Tested Substitutions
- Chocolate Cake Mix. I prefer to use this gluten free vegan chocolate cake mix that has chocolate chips already in the mix, but you may use your favorite gluten free cake mix instead.
- Over-Ripe Bananas. You only need a half of a small overripe banana, about 2-3 tablespoons of mashed banana.
- Dairy Free Milk. My preference is to use almond milk, but you may use soy milk, oat milk or whatever plant milk you prefer. If you are not dairy free or vegan, regular dairy milk will work just fine.
Favorite Toppings & Add-Ins
- Add 2-3 tablespoons of your favorite protein powder to boost your protein intake.
- Add chocolate chips or chocolate chunks to the cake mix if yours doesn't have it already to make a little puddle of warm melted chocolate in the center of the cake.
- Top it with a scoop of ice cream! I love adding this ninja creami protein coffee, mint chocolate chip or vanilla ice cream to mine.
- Add a dollop of whipped cream and a few shavings of dark chocolate to make this a decadent yet simple dessert.
- Drizzle peanut butter on top and add a few slices of the remaining half banana. A few crushed peanuts would be delicious, too!
- Add a teaspoon or two of vanilla extract to enhance the chocolate flavor. You can also add a teaspoon of espresso powder which will also enhance the richness of the chocolate flavor!
Chocolate Banana Mug Cake Step by Step Instructions
1. Mash the banana. In a microwave-safe mug, add ½ the banana & mash it gently in the bottom of the mug with a fork being careful not to completely puree it. It is okay to still have a few small chunks of banana left.
2. Add the remaining ingredients. Add the chocolate cake mix and milk to the mug, mixing gently with a fork until the cake batter thickens. If you're adding chocolate chips, you can do so now.
3. Cook the mug cake. Place the mug in the microwave & cook for 60 seconds. Note that cooking time may vary as different microwaves have different levels of power. If your cake has not baked in 60 seconds, continue microwaving it in increments of 5 seconds until the cake bakes fully, being careful not to dry it out by microwaving it for too long. Top with extra chocolate chips & banana slices if desired.
